The benefits of microbreaks! Let’s break into it!
Now, you might be asking, what the heck are microbreaks? If anything, I want as big of a break as possible! I get it but hear me out. New research found that microbreaks throughout the workday increase work engagement and decrease end-of-day fatigue resulting from work.
Now, you might seriously be asking, ok, so what are microbreaks? “A microbreak is, by definition, short. But a five-minute break can be golden if you take it at the right time,” according to Sophia Cho, one of the co-authors of the study. Well, what is next, you might be asking. If so, awesome, I’ve got you. Take those 5 minutes, and do something mindfully. If you are working from home, that can be getting away from your work setup and spend time in the yard or going for a 5-minute walk up the block. The key is whatever you are doing, do it mindfully. If you are barefoot in the yard, pay attention to the textures on your feet or the warmth from the sun on your body (my Southern California bias is showing).
That might sound too simple like it can not be that easy. You are correct, and you might not have those specific options available to you. Luckily, you can check out this article, where the author goes into more detail with more ideas for how to structure and utilize what he terms “microchillers”.
