Interpersonal Relationships Issues

Interpersonal relationships are relationships between two people. You have interpersonal relationships with everyone you know including family, close friends, and intimate partners as well as neighbors, acquaintances, companions and connections. Relationships vary in the degree of intimacy and sharing or self-disclosure, length, life stage, proximity, and power of each party. Relationships have a beginning, change, and grow or wane.

The importance of interpersonal relationships cannot be understated for their impact on our mental and physical health. Family and friends comprise a vital support system, one that helps us feel a sense of belonging, that we matter and that we are safe.

Important relationships are built on trust, love, reciprocity, mutual respect and loyalty. It takes time to develop important relationships and requires work to maintain those relationships that are important to us. Open and honest communication is vital.  Some relationships are time and circumstance limited, such as those that develop at work or school, and others may be lifelong. Inevitably there will be conflicts.

Some common relationship issues include

  • diverging interests
  • drifting apart
  • disagreements
  • neglect
  • dishonesty
  • rejection
  • refusing to have difficult conversations
  • miscommunication including not listening
  • inflexibility and refusing to compromise
  • selfishness
  • negativity, criticism and blaming, manipulation, or disrespect

Relationships naturally have a beginning, middle and end. The Covid pandemic has shown us that isolation is hard of relationships. Social networks have shrunken and now contain groups of trusted intimates. Causal friendships have grown or been replaced.

If you feel there are problems with your relationships it may be a good time to talk with a therapist.
